2984. James R. Coffey was born circa 1827 in Alabama.

John may have been a veteran of the War with Mexico. A pension application was made by Nancy Coffee, "now known as Lawrence, Nancy" as an Army widow of James R. Coffee, a veteran of the Mexican War who served as a private in Co., F. (Capt. Jones) of the 1st Ala Infantry. The original date of commencement was Apr. 29, 1889 at a rate of $8 per month. It was increased to $12 per month on Apr. 19, 1908. The pension ended with Nancy's death on Feb. 24, 1916. The document does not tell us when James died.

James R. Coffey and Nancy A. Shields were married. They appeared in the census on 13 November 1850 in Jackson Co., AL.10586 Nancy A. Shields, daughter of Jacob Shields and Elizabeth Carr, was born on 29 April 1827 in Jackson Co., AL. Nancy resided with her father and her three daughters in Coffee Town, Jackson Co., AL on 10 July 1860. She began receiving a pension on 29 April 1889 in Fulton Co., IL for John Coffey's service in the War with Mexico.10587 Nancy died in Canton, Fulton Co., IL on 24 February 1916 and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, Fulton Co., IL in February 1916 .10588,10589
