Death of Col. James A. Coffey

Col. James A. Coffey, of the firm of Coffey & Marsh, died in this city, Monday morning last, of pneumonia, after an illness of eight days. The funeral took place Tuesday. The remains were buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery, and were followed to their last resting place by a large number of citizens. Col. Coffey was 51 years of age.

Col. Coffey was an old resident of Kansas. He had resided in Dodge City but about three months. He came to Kansas in the year 1855, and passed through the memorable and exciting struggle in the State during its early years. He was the founder of Coffeyville, Kansas, a thriving town, which was named in honor of him. He was also founder of Humboldt, Kansas, which town was laid out in 1859. Col. Coffey was well known in Kansas, and the news of his death will be sad tidings to his many friends. The family and friends have our sympathies in this sad bereavement.

According to Marvin Coffey's research, James moved to Kansas in 1854 where he worked with anti-slavery forces, later going into the merchandising business. He is said to have learned at least two Indian languages and in 1870 founded the town of Coffeyville, KS.

Very probably there were additional children born to James and Louisa. In the 1870 census children were enumerated by initial as MJ, age 18; ER, age 16; JA, age 14; S., age 12; Amison (?), age 10; L., age 8 and S., age 6.

He was a friend and business partner with "Oliver March, proprietor of Oliver March & Co., a Steam Flouring Mill in Dodge City..." In 1859 March "became a licensed Indian Trader with J. A. Coffey at Humboldt, Kansas."
