Apparently, Max was a violinist. He is credited with performing a duet with Ellen F. Flahrity on Jan. 1, 1917 at a meeting in Wellman.

From an article headlined "Wellman W.C.T.U. Does Good Work" found in the Iowa City Citizen, Iowa City, IA, Jun 2, 1917:

"The civil department of the W.C.T.U. have been doing fine work in our park the past few years, and it has become the beauty spot of Wellman. In order to instill more patriotism in our big boys a call for help was made and Max Coffey waas first to respond with willingness to do his part, since the country need the "man with the hoe" as well as the "man with the gun," especially those who are not old enough to carry the gun..."

Under the headline "Fine Program by Philomateon Society," The Iowa Citizen, Iowa City, IA, Dec. 24, 1919:

"The Philomatheon Literary society under the supervision of Mr. Gibson gave the following program in the hich school auditorium last Friday after noon: [then article lists names of performers]..." [then names] "superintendent of school, Max Coffey;..."

Under the headline "Neighborhood New - Wellman News", The Iowa City Press Citizen, Iowa City, Dec. 31, 1924:

"Wilbur Darnell, helen and Max Coffey and Miss Louise Braden, S. U. I. students, are spending their vacation here with their parents."

Referring to a Shelby Co. Soil Conservation tour and dinner meeting in Westphalia, IA and under the headline "Soil Conservation Tours Are Arranged", Jun. 26, 1951:

"Max Coffey, farm editor of the Omaha World Herald, will be the speaker for the evening program."

Max Arthur Coffey and Dora Ann Heath were married circa 1927.
