Obituary, The News Virginian, Waynesboro, VA, 19 Dec., 1972

A Waynesboro area man was killed instantly yesterday morning in a non-collision wreck on Va. 39 approximately one-half mile west of Warm Springs in Bath County, State Police report.

The victim was identified as George Clinton Coffey, 26, of Gravel Ridge Rd. and an employe of Blue Ridge Dunbrik Co., Inc.

Police said the westbound vehicle went off the left side of the highway, struck a bank and wet down a 150 to 200-foot embankment. The body was found nearly 14 feet from the truck's initial impact, having been thrown from the 10-wheel straight truck, police added.

Police said the victim had sustained massive skull fractures. The truck was described by police as a "total" loss.

J. M. Johnson, vice president of Blue Ridge Dunbrik, said Mr. Coffey was driving a truck carrying completed septic tanks to the Hot Springs area, one of two trucks making the run.

He said the first truck, driven by Lee Rohrbaugh of Crimora had reached a certain point to wait for the second one. When it did not arrive, Mr. Rohrbaugh turned his rig around and went back to Warm Springs, not seeing the accident.

When he returned west, he spotted Mr. Coffey's cap along the road and then spotted the wreck.
Mr. Johnson said it could not be determined what happened, whether Mr. Coffey had lost control of the vehicle or if he became ill. He said there was no indication of a failure by the vehicle.
