Fred died at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC on 21 May 2019 and was buried at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain Twp., Buncombe Co., NC on 27 May 2019 .6468

Obituary, Pendrys Funeral Home

Mr. Coffey was born on March 16, 1924 in Caldwell County to the late Hillie Horton Coffey and Bessy McLane Coffey.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Fred served his country during WWII, being involved with all four major operations in the Philippians with General Douglas MacArthur, he with the 1460th Combat Engineers and was attached to the 6th Ranger Battalion and also served in occupied Japan after WWII ended. He received four bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and a Victory Medal. Fred was a lover of the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hiking, reading and he made walking sticks and built bird houses.

Survivors include his sister, Ora Lee Carter and her son, Terry Carter, both of S. Daytona Florida, and his beloved dog, “Pup”.

A funeral service will be held to honor Mr. Coffey on Monday, May 27, 2019 at 6:00 pm in the chapel of Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Waters officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.
Interment will be in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mtn.

The family would like to thank Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care and his caregivers: Mandy, Rita, Kiesha and many more for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
