438. Rev. Cornelius Coffey was born on 1 March 1812 in North Carolina. Rev. Coffey died on 18 September 1852 at the age of 40 in Monroe Co., IN and was buried at Vernal-Mayfield Cemetery in Richland Twp., Monroe Co., IN.^1646,1647

Rev. Cornelius Coffey and Margaret Smith were married on 15 November 1836 in Monroe Co., IN.¹⁶⁴⁸ They^¹⁶⁴⁸ appeared in the census on 28 August 1850 in Washington, Owen Co., IN.¹⁶⁴⁹ Margaret Smith was born in 1818 in Kentucky. Margaret died in Indiana on 14 January 1883 and was buried at Vernal-Mayfield Cemetery in Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN in January 1883 .¹⁶⁵⁰

Rev. Cornelius Coffey and Margaret Smith had the following children:

1722	i.	Copernicus H. Coffey¹⁶¹⁵ was born in 1840 in Owen Co., IN. He lived with his parents in Washington, Owen Co., IN on 28 August 1850. He lived with his mother and step-father in Monroe Co., IN on 21 August 1860.¹⁶⁵¹ Copernicus died in battle at the age of 24 at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on 29 June 1864 and was originally buried at Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. He was later reburied at Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Cobb Co., GA.^1652,1653 According to the History of Monroe County, (Page 353) Copernicus H. Coffey died June 1864 of wounds; Christopher C. Coffey, died at Farmington, Miss., July 1862; James M. Coffey, died at Syracuse Mo., December, 1861. All were members of the 22d Mo. Regiment. The source does not tell us where Copernicus died. However, according to Laurence Coffey, Copernicus was killed at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during the Civil War. The Indiana Adjutant General Report says that he was 1st Sgt. in command of Co. I, 22d Inf., and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on Jun. 27, 1864 and died on June 29. He was originally buried at Kennesaw Mt., but later moved to Marietta National Cemetery. Another source reports his death at Cheatham Hill.
