Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. John Fellows Coffey, 81, of the 500 block of Craford Place, died July 26, 2000, in his residence. 

Col. Coffey, a native of Portland, Ore., was the son of the late Josephine Richardson Coffey and Dr. Jay Russell Coffey. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 12, 1940, and retired on May 31, 1966, from Headquarters Marine Corps, Arlington. His numerous military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Combat ''V'' and gold star in lieu of second award; Navy Commendation Medal; three Presidential Unit Citations; and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with twelve stars. 

He graduated from Old Dominion University with a B.S. degree in business administration finance. Following military retirement, he was an active volunteer in his community including six years with the United Way; 10 years with the AARP as a tax counselor for the elderly; and three years at the U.S. Naval Hospital. 

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Warner Coffey; two sons, John F. Coffey Jr. of Dexter, Mich., Thomas D. Coffey of Hillsboro, Ore.; a brother, Joel R. Coffey of Portland; a granddaughter, Julie Elizabeth Coffey; two nieces and seven nephews. 

A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Julia Dorsey Loomis. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial donations may be made to Portsmouth Chapter of American Red Cross, 700 London Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. 

A living couple was married in 1943 in Norfolk, VA.44454 Living, daughter of Thomas D. Warner and Lucy Carney, was born circa 1920 in Washington, D.C..
