Thomas Jackson Coffey was born Sept. 20, 1866, in Denmark, Russell County, Kentucky and died Dec. 21, 1945 in Kansas. He was a son of Stanton P. Coffey and Mary C. Saufley. His original name was Stonewall Jackson Coffey, however, he was called Thomas J. by the 1880 Creelsboro, Russell County, Kentucky census where he was listed in the Reuben Payne household. His twin brother was Robert Lee Coffey.

Thomas J. Coffey married Mattie Payne in 1896 in Kentucky. Mattie Payne was born July 8, 1866 in Russell County, Kentucky and died July 24, 1951 in Harper, Kansas. Her parents were William Pigg Payne and Mary Jane Tarter. Mattie Payne had previously been married to William Bruce Portwood in Texas but returned home to Russell County Kentucky after his death. Thomas J. Coffey would by then be living in the household of Mattie's uncle Reuben Payne.

Thomas J. Coffey and Mattie Payne had the following children:

General Notes:

-The 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Jamestown, District 6, Russell County, Kentucky shows Thomas J. Coffey, Mattie Coffey, Ellanie?, Robert L., Ella M. Portwood and Thomas Portwood in the household of William P. Payne. Ella M. and Thomas were Mattie's children from her marriage with Bruce Portwood. The birth date of Ellanie? Is given as Feb. 1897 and she is listed as a granddaughter of William P. Payne. William J. is not listed in this census. He would have been born Dec. 1897. Possibly it is William J. and there is a transcription error. Also interesting is that Mattie is listed as having two children and two living. Ella M. and Thomas Portwood would be living children- but so would William J. and Robert L. There is some tradition that Thomas J. was married previously as well and these children could be from that marriage, however, Ellanie? and Robert L. are listed as William P. Payne's grandchildren.

-The 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Belle Plaine, Sumner, Kansas shows Thomas “Coffee” with wife Mattie and Ella M. (Portwood), Thomas B. (Portwood), William J., Robert E., Ruben P. and Charles S.

-The 1915 Sumner County, Kansas state census shows T.J. Coffey, wife Mattie, son W., son R.L., son R.P., son Geo., and son Chas.
