From the records we can deduce the first account is perhaps the more accurate history of the Giddens family in North Carolina. So, if that's true, then Edward was a brother of James. What the records don't tell us is, who were Aaron, Reuben, Margaret, Eliza, and Polly? Margaret appears to be about the same age as Edward and James, so a likely hypothesis would be, she was the wife of the third brother, Reuben. There is no adequate explanation for the young children in her household in the 1800 census, if her husband had died in the Revolutionary War. Both Reuben and Aaron appear to be more closely associated with Edward than James, so it seems more likely they were either Edward's or Reuben's sons. At this time I suspect Reuben was a son of Edward.
