MASSACHUSETTS MARRIAGES, 1633-1850: This source shows that John Smith married Hannah C. Miller on 12 Mar 1830* in the city of Waltham, Middlesex, MA. (There are other marriages of men named “John Smith” to women “Hannah” in Massachusetts, but this one is in the right city (see later census), and is consistent with a daughter Caroline born in about 1831, and consistent with a “Miller” living in household in 1870 census.)

**Other sources say this was the date of the Marriage Bann, and the actual marriage was 1 Apr 1830.)

CONTINUATION: This family is extended by the genealogy found at:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/14733848/person/1165939873

1830 AND 1840 CENSUS: “John Smith” is too common a name is Massachuetts, and I can’t find exactly the right combination of family member numbers and ages. (All censuses before 1850 only name the head of the household, and then only provide a head count for the rest of the family.)

1850 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: John Smith (age 48) and wife Hannah (43) are found with daughters Caroline O (19), Ellen M (18), and Emma (5).

1860 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: John Smith (58) and Hannah (52) are there, with daughters Ellen (28) and Emma (15). John is a farmer, with real estate worth $1000. Ellen is a seamstress. Also in the house is a Sally Sherman, age 50, relationhip not identified.

1870 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: John (67) and Hannah (63) are there. John is a farmer, who now values his real estate at $15,000 and personal estate at $1000. Also there is daughter Ellen, but she is now “Ellen Teele” suggesting she was married after 1860. And living with her is Gardner Teele, age 2. Present alo is Sarah Miller (95), who must be Hannah’s mother. And there is a John Smith, age 35, who is identified as a farm laborer.

1880 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: Indexed as “Smitt”, but I read it as “Smith”. John (78) is there, identifies himself as a “Laborer” and as “Blind”. Hannah is age 73. Daughter Ellen Teele is 45, and her son Gardnan (sic) age 12. Also there is John’s daughter, Emma (Smith) Thompson age 35, and her daughter Blana (Blanch) age 8. Ellen and Emma both work in a watch factory. THE MYSTERY: Household includes a John S. Teele, age 43, who is a complete puzzle. One guess is that he’s the same person as the John Smith age 35 from the 1870 census - and the census taker just lost track of changing names?
