NOTE: For his military service (see below) John Sline said he was born in Lowell, Middlesex, MA in 1874. And in census reports he says his parents were born in Ireland. There is only ONE Sline/Slyne family in Middlesex in the 1880 census, and that family has a “John Slyne” of exactly the right age, with parents born in Ireland. Therefore there is little doubt that this is the right family. See additional notes with parents James and Mary Slyne.

1904 MILITARY SERVICE: Enlisted in U. S. Army in Lowell, MA, on 18 Nov 1904. Born in Lowell, MA, age 24 yrs 6 mos, a machinist. Has blue eye, auburn hair, ruddy complexion, 5’6” tall. (Regiment & Company given, but don’t understand abbreviations.) Discharted 14 Nov 1907 at Fort Barrancas, FL. (This is now on Naval Air Station, Pensacola.)

1908 MILITARY SERVICE: Re-enlisted on 3 Feb, 1908, in Boston, listing his occupation as “soldier”. Discharged 2 Feb 1911, at Ft. Banks, MA. (Trouble reading abbreviations, but think he may have been a corporal, exceptional service, etc.)

1908 MARRIAGE:
One day after the above re-enlistment, on 4 Feb 1908, he married Annie J Turner. They indicated they lived in Winthrop, MA. Thomas was from Lowell, his occupation was “soldier”, and his parents were James Sline and Mary Noonan. Annie’s was from Brookline, and her parents were Thomas Turner and Bridget Ryan.

1910 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA:
Not sure - but may be John W Sline, who is age 37 and a boarder in the household of Corneilus Mccarthy.

1918 WWI DRAFT REGISTRATION: John Joeph Sline, of 103 Day Street, Boston, Suffolk, MA registered. Birth date given as 25 Apr 1874. He is a machinist, his employer is “Thomas G. Grant”. His wife is Annie J. Sline.

1920 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: John S. Sline is age 44, Annie is 42. Both were born in Massachusetts, with parents born in Ireland. Employment info is illegible. At home are sons John (9) and George (6). The household includes Thomas (41) and Margaret (38) Turner, who are brother-in-law and sister-in-law to the head of household.

1930 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: John J. Sline is age 55, has been married 32 years, was born in Massachusetts, and his parents were born in the “Irish Free State”. He is a mechanic in oil refining. Annie is age 54, also born in MA with parents from “Irish Free State”. At home are sons John J (20, does general work in a shoe factory) and George (16, works as usher in a theatre). In house in Thomas H Turner, “brother-in-law” (52, bookkeeper in oil refining).

1937 SOCIAL SECURITY APPLICATION:
Born 25 Apr 1874, parents James Sline & Mary Noonan.

1940 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: John J is age 65, and Annie is also age 65. At home is son George C, age 26. Son George is a “car parker” for the railroad company.

1942 WWII “OLD MAN” DRAFT REGISTRATION (FOR MEN BORN 1877-1897): John was too old for even this registration, but his brother-in-law Thomas Turner gave “Name and Address of Person Who Will Always Know Your Address” as “John J. Sline” (See notes with John’s wife Annie for discussion of why Thomas Turner info is relevant!)

1945 RESIDENCE:
In the Boston City Directories, for years 1938-1945, John J. Sline and Annie Sline are found listed as living at 20 Valentine, Roxbury.
