James Madison Coffey April 4, 1923 - June 5, 2013 LANSING - James Madison Coffey, age 90, of 717C Deep Ford Road, Lansing, passed away Wednesday morning, June 5, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Coffey was born April 4, 1923 in Caldwell County, a son of the late Columbus and Lillie Hatley Coffey. He was a master gardener at his mountaintop home which was a showplace of beautiful flowers. Mr. Coffey was an organic grower before it became popular, raising prize winning vegetables without the use of fertilizers and pesticides. He produced bumper crops of tomatoes every year which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.

A proud veteran of World War II, Mr. Coffey served his country in the United States Marine Corps in Okinawa, Saipan, and Guam in the South Pacific. He was proud of his country and proud to be an American.

Mr. Coffey is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Austin Coffey of Gastonia; one daughter, Sandra C. Brown and husband Ray of Blowing Rock; four sons, Dennis E. Coffey and wife Sandra of Hudson, Roger J. Coffey and wife Cheryl of Stanley, Tony M. Coffey and wife Merle, and Kenneth R. Coffey and wife Deeda, all of Charlotte. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard Dale Coffey.

Graveside services for James Madison Coffey will be conducted Friday afternoon, June 7, 2013, at 2:00 o'clock, at Boone Fork Community Cemetery. Officiating will be Reverend Jimmy Britt. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans, will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28215-3220.

Bonnie Louise Austin Coffey February 8, 1930 - March 10, 2015 GASTONIA - Bonnie Louise Austin Coffey, age 85, of Wilkinson Boulevard, Gastonia, passed away Tuesday morning, March 10, 2015, at Meadowwood Nursing Center in Gastonia.

Mrs. Coffey was born February 8, 1930 in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Joseph Edward Austin and Janie Carlton Austin. Prior to moving to Meadowwood Nursing Center she lived in Lansing, North Carolina and enjoyed many retirement years with her late husband James Madison Coffey. She loved gardening and collecting antique pottery and glassware.

Mrs. Coffey is survived by a daughter, Sandra Coffey Brown and husband Ray of Blowing Rock, and four sons, Dennis E. Coffey and wife Sandra of Hudson, Roger J. Coffey and wife Cheryl of Stanley, Tony M. Coffey and wife Merle of Charlotte, and Kenneth R. Coffey and wife Deeda of Kershaw, South Carolina. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty-four great-grand-children; two brothers, Norman Austin and Beno Austin, both of Lenoir, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard Dale Coffey; one sister, Mrs. Elvie Beard, and five brothers, Vernon Austin, Ray Austin, Rubin Austin, Edward Austin, and Clarence Austin.

Funeral services for Bonnie Louise Austin Coffey will be conducted Friday afternoon, March 13, 2015, at 2:00 o';clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o';clock. Officiating will be Reverend Jimmy Britt. Burial will follow in Boone Fork Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends, from 1:00 until 2:00 o';clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer';s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28215-3220.
