18302. Odell Joseph Coffey was born on 9 February 1920 in North Carolina. He lived with his maternal granmother Etta Hayes Coffey in Wilson Creek Twp., Avery Co., NC on 2 April 1930. He lived with his father and step-mother in Globe Twp., Caldwell Co., NC on 15 April 1940. Odell Coffey

Odell J. Coffey, 85, of Newland the Edgemont community died Monday, November 14, 2005 at his residence. Son of the late Ivy and Exie Coffey he was a member of the New Hopewell Baptist Church were he served as deacon. He worked as a supervisor for Avery County Transportation where he retired and was a veteran of the US Army.

Survivors include his wife Velma Gragg Coffey of the home; two daughters Donnua Beers of Minneapolis, NC and Jada Coffey of the home; and three sisters Janet Ingram of Lenoir, NC, Velma Adkins of Lenoir, NC and Betty Pope of Hudson, NC. He was preceded in death by one sister Opel Coffey.

Services for Mr. Coffey will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 17 in the New Hopewell Baptist Church with the Revs. Doug Bare, Randy Gibbs and Steve Coose officiating. Military graveside service will be conducted by the VFW Pat Ray Post #4286 in the New Hopewell Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Velma Gragg Coffey, age 85, of Newland passed away on Thursday November 19, 2009 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

A native of Avery County, she was born a daughter of the late Roddy and Stella Gragg.

Velma was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and enjoyed flowers and picking galax.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Odel Coffey; her two brothers, Ray Gagg and Bill Gragg.

Velma was a very caring and loving woman who loved her family.

She has left to cherish her memories are: her son, Ritchie Lindecamp; her four daughters, Jada Coffey, Carolyn Lindecamp, Donnua Coffey and Debbie Coffey; grandchildren, Cameron Beers, Chase Toney, Luke White, Chandra Toney, Levi White, Hannah Lindecamp, Brittney Lindecamp, Anna Lindecamp, Jason Lindecamp, Leon Manuel and Clint Manuel; great grandchildren, Noah Eggers, Allie Lindecamp and Tanner Lindecamp.

Funeral services for Mrs. Coffey will be held on Sunday November 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at the New Hopewell Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Coonse, Rev. Dean Bare, Rev. Randy Gibson and Rev. Carl Osborn will officiate. Interment will follow in the New Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday November 21st from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
