Obituary for Zelma Coffey, Evans Funeral Service & Crematory, 11/29/2019

Mrs. Zelma Leanna Hawkins Coffey, age 91, of Poquoson, VA, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Commonwealth Assisted Living in Hampton, VA.

Born November 19, 1928 in Wilkes County, Zelma was a daughter of the late Benjamin Luther and Hettie Sanders Hawkins. Zelma was a retired upholstery seamstress from the Crestline Furniture Company in Valdese. She was a longtime member of the West Lenoir Baptist Church. Zelma enjoyed working outside in her yard and travelling in her earlier years. Zelma also enjoyed doing word search puzzles. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, for whom she loved to cook. They especially enjoyed her fried chicken, biscuits and gravy. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Carroll Coffey; three sisters, Violet Hawkins, Dean Annas and Naomi Beane; two brothers, Perry Hawkins and Ross Hawkins.

Survivors include her son and daughter in law, Dale Coffey (wife Pat) of Poquoson, VA; her grandchildren, Tracey Coffey of Fayetteville, NC, Jason Coffey (wife Kari) of Newport News, VA, Brandon Coffey (wife Nancy) of Quinton, VA and Justin Coffey of Navarre, FL; her great grandchildren, Madi Coffey, Garrett Coffey, Haylen Coffey, Colbie Coffey and Landon Coffey; three sisters, Eloise Bolick, Vernice Whisnant and Novella Benfield; two brothers, Hurley Hawkins and Grady Hawkins; Zelma is also survived by numerous other relatives.

A celebration of Zelma’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Doug Cox officiating. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
