Ella Virginia (Coffey) Fretwell, 90, of Stuarts Draft, passed away early on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on May 8, 1922, in Greenville, the daughter of the late Martin S. and Effie Virginia (Conner) Coffey. Mrs. Fretwell was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Stuarts Draft. During her working life she was employed as a janitor with Mastic Company in Stuarts Draft until her retirement. Ella enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great- grandchildren; embroidering, gardening and reading when time allowed.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah Jackson Fretwell; son, Douglas Norman Fretwell; siblings, Margaret Robertson, Herbert Coffey, Charles Coffey, Lee Coffey and Guy Coffey.

Survivors include her loving daughter, Joyce F. Henkel and husband, Billy, of Stuarts Draft; five grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; several great-grandchildren; special friend, Ruth Coyner; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Calvary United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Doug Paysour and the Reverend Sarah Locke officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Blaine Zimmerman, Wayne Henkel, Robbie Henkel, Winston Campbell, Daniel Wayne Sprouse and Travis Dritto. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Henkel, Wayne Coffey, Anthony Bragg and Shelton Bragg.

STUARTS DRAFT-Elijah Jackson Fretwell, 68, of Route 2, was dead-on-arrival at 1:55 a.m. Tuesday at Waynesboro Community Hospital.
He was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Augusta County, a son of Roy T. and Bessie Whitesell Fretwell.

Mr. Fretwell was employed as a mechanic by the City of Waynesboro prior to his retirement. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9339 and Calvary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ella Coffey Fretwell; one daughter, Mrs. Joyce F. Henkel of Stuarts Draft; one son, Doug N. Fretwell of Fretwell; one sister, Mrs. Viola Painter of Waynesboro; three granddaughters and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil Fretwell, Alvin Fretwell and Ivan Fretwell.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Stuarts Draft chapel of Etter Funeral Home by Dr. Floyd J. Wingfield. Burial will be in Augusta Memorial Park, Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339 will conduct military rites.
Active pallbearers will be Ralph Hailey, Orville Painter, Daniel Painter, Wayne Coffey, Dale Coffey and Roger Robertson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Ditto, Argel Losh, Pete Painter, George Truslow, Lawrence Hailey, Homer Rankin and Alvin Fretwell Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening in the funeral home, and at other times in the Fretwell residence and the residence of his daughter.
