Genevieve (Jenny) Coffey Moyer

Genevieve "Jenny" Coffey Moyer, 75, of 4568 Patrick Henry Highway, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Augusta Medical Center, after struggling with a lengthy illness.

Ms. Moyer, known by her family and friends as Jenny or "Portuguese," was born Sept. 10, 1932, at White Rock, Nelson County, the daughter of the late Clarence Henry and Maywood Sorrells Coffey.

She was raised around the White Rock, Montebello, Tye River and Piney River areas of Nelson County. In addition to her mother and father, she was raised primarily by Sip and Olie Fitzgerald of Piney River, who have preceded her in death.

Jenny spent most of her adult life supporting Bill Archie Moyer pursue his U.S. Army military career for 18 and 1/2 years until 1968. Then, in 1974, she again decided to pursue the U.S. Army military career, while helping her nephew for another 21 years until January 1996 when he (Clayton) decided to retire. In total, she served 39 years of service supporting patriotically the U.S. Army and always gave unselfishly and never asked for anything or for any recognition in return. This alone exemplifies the type of person that she always strived to live to be! She retired from a business in Oklahoma City, Okla., in 1998 and decided to move to Virginia to be closer to her family.

In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Vivian Allen, Velma Quick, Elaine Bryant and Shirley Maddox; and a brother Jerry Dean (J.D.) Fitzgerald.

Jenny is survived by her nephew, who she helped raise, Clayton Derell "Donnie," and his wife, Elbia Ruth Coffey; her four grandchildren, Aaron, 24, Kathleen "Kayti," 22, Jessika, 12, and Angelina "Angel," 11; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Wiseman and Aubrey Coffey; one brother, William H. Coffey; and four sisters, Vera Falls, Georgie Phillips, Betty Coffey and Josephine Carr.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday May 4, 2008, at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, with Pastor Billy Coffey officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Paran Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will gather after the funeral service at her sister's, Betty Coffey's, residence at 919 Mt. Torrey Road, Lyndhurst, VA 22952.

Active pallbearers will be Larry Bryant, Billy Coffey, Marvin Phillips, "Buck" Fitzgerald, Donald Bryant, Butch Allen, Jerry Bryant and Dale Allen.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday May 3, 2008, at the funeral home.
