"Wash and Tilda made their home in the Boone Fork Community of Watauga County. They are listed in the Caldwell County Census but they were considered to be Wataugans. They had several children... Wash had a farm where the family raised most of their food. Wash worked as a lumber-man. He did a great deal of logging in the Globe Valley and around Grandfather Mountain.

"Matilda was known to everyone as 'Aunt Tilda.' If anyone was sick or a woman was ready to give birth, Aunt Tilda was called. She grew and collected many herbs to use for medicines. Wash and Tilda's home was always opened to company. They had plenty of room for everyone. Many of their grandchildren would come to visit and often stayed the night. It wasn't unusual for the grandchildren to bring along a friend or two. The friends were made just as welcome as the grandchildren. Wash died on Nov. 9, 1912. His tombstone shows his age as 69 years, 11 mos., 19 days. Matilda lived until April 2, 1927. They are buried in the Boone Fork Baptist Church Cemetery."
