"The third grand jury, in the county, was empaneled [sic] in the first circuit court, which was held for the county on the 7th day of February, 1803. The sale of Chesley's estate was held in Maury Co. on Nov. 9 and 10, 1818. Those recorded as buying from the estate were: Jacob Coffee, John Coffee, Landon Coffee, Nathan Coffee and Joel Coffey.

On page 340 of will book (page 91 of source) is the entry for the inventory of Chesley's estate and reads: "Inventory of property of Chesley Coffee, deceased, 19 Oct. 1818. Note on forgy [sic] and Wm. Maxwell; note on Nathan Coffee; note on Thomas Roper; by Nathan Coffee, Margaritt Coffee, Landon Coffee."

Page 341 contains this: "Appointment of Margarett Coffee, widow of Chesley Coffee, deceased, by Tyree Dollins; William Rodgers; Wm. Eastham, this 3rd Nov. 1818."

Burial site was not given.

Some researchers claim that Chesley was the son of Joshua Coffee, born 1745 in Prince Edward Co., VA, grandson of Peter Coffee of Prince Edward Co. Joshua Coffee left a will in Guilford Co., NC in which he names three children none of which was Chesley. No evidence has ever been found to prove who the parents of Chesley were.

This Chesley is the only one of the suspected five sons of Chesley, Sr. for whom an exact birth and death date has been found. He and Margaret were married before 1780 and can be found on the 1782 tax list for Wilkes Co., NC.

In his book Coffee - Gilbreath - Turnbow Families, Elmer C. Gilbreath wrote:

"Chesley Coffey, the first record we have of him is when he asked for the appointment of surveyor, 1804, in Adair Kentucky (Adair Court Order Book "A", Page 116). A deed dated Dec 9, 1800, in which he sells land to John McClain, speaks of him as Chesley Coffee of Maury County, Tennessee (Deed Book "C", Page 51). He was born before 1766 as the 1810 Census of Adair County, Kentucky shows his age as "45 and up."
