178. Joel Coffey was born on 15 June 1789 in Tennessee. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Cooper Co., MO.603 Joel died on 10 December 1855 at the age of 66 in Vancouver, Clark Co., WA and was buried at Fern Prairie Cemetery in Camas, Clark Co., WA.604,605

Joel Coffey and Sarah Mackey606 were married on 9 April 1818 in Maury Co., TN.607,608 They607,608 appeared in the census in 1830 in Cooper Co., MO.609 They609 appeared in the census on 2 September 1850 in Cooper Co., MO.610

"In 1852 Joel took his family to Oregon. They first settled at Vancouver (now in Washington state), where Joel died on September 10, 1855. There were 10 children born to this union, but a number of them died young; three are buried in the family plot with Joel in Camas, Washington. The most noteworthy of their children are twins Terral M. and Alexander L., born March 15, 1831. They both went to Umitilla Co., OR. Terrell was a very prosperous farmer near Pendleton, and his brother Alexander became the county surveyor in Adams Co., Washington." Sarah Mackey611, daughter of William Lewis Mackey and Elizabeth Ashbrook, was born in 1795 in Rutherford Co., NC.612 Sarah died in Missouri .613

Alexander Lewis Coffey was born on 15 March 1831 in Booneville, Cooper Co., MO. He lived with the Willial Ginder family in Clark Co., WA on 24 June 1870.614 He appeared in the census on 1 July 1880 in Greasewood, Umatilla Co., OR.615 Alexander appeared in the census on 5 July 1900 in Pendleton, Umatilla Co., OR.616 Alexander died of diabetes on 8 August 1913 at the age of 82 in Vancouver, Clark Co., WA and was buried at Fern Prairie Cemetery in Camas, Clark Co., WA on 10 August 1913.617,618,619

PIONEER VETERAN SUCCUMBS

Alexander Lewis Coffey, Indian War veteran, pioneer resident of the county for 61 years, died at St. Joseph's hospital yesterday afternoon after an illness of two weeks duration. Mr. Coffey crossed the plains with his parents in 1852 and located that year in Clarke County. He was born in Cooper County, Missouri, Mar. 18, 1831.

His life is closely related with the early history of Clarke county. He was an Indian War veteran and took active part in many battles of frontier days. In 1872 he was elected sheriff of Clarke county. He was a civil engineer and spent much of his life in the pursuit of this profession. For a number of years he has made his home at Camas.

Mr. Coffey is survived by one brother, T. M. Coffey of Washougal and one sister, Mrs. M. L. Abbott of Mill Plain.

The funeral services will be held tomorrow [Sunday] at 11 o'clock at Oak Grove farm near Fern Prairie. Interment will be made in Oak Grove cemetery. [Oak Grove Cemetery is now Fern Prairie Cemetery].

A. L. Coffey Dies, Aged 82

Man Who Crossed Plains in 1852 Passes at Vancouver

Vancouver, Wash., Aug. 8 - (Special) - A. L. Coffey, past 82 years old, Sheriff of Clark County from 1872 until 1876, who crossed the plains from Boonville, Mo., to Vancouver in 1852 with an ox team. died at St. Joseph's Hospital in this city today.

Mr. Coffey took up a donation land claim where his home was. He participated in a number of Indian battles and joined at expedition to Missoula in 1860. The last 30 miles he pulled a hand sled, the snow being too deep for the team he was driving. Returning to Vancouver, he was elected Assessor in 1868 and served two years.

His wife died two years ago. He leaves a brother, T. M. Coffey, of Washougal and a sister, Mrs. Abbott, who lives on Mill Plain in this county.
