James Alfred Coffey, 96 years (and 4 months, as he would say), departed this life on Monday night, October 4, 2004 at his home. He was the 4th of 10 children born to Jacob Morris Coffey and Mary Jane Lotts Coffey on May 8, 1908 in Rockbridge County.

Mr. Coffey was retired from Lees Carpets with 28 years of service in ground's maintenance. He was well known to many as owner and operator of Coffey's Slaughterhouse in Tinkerville. He was a member of the Natural Bridge Baptist Church and in recent years attended Victory Baptist Church in Buena Vista. He is survived by his wife, Helen Falls Coffey and three step children, Doris Ann and husband Marion "Butch" Bryant of Lexington, Steve and wife Darlene Entsminger and Ray and wife Shelby Entsminger all of Glasgow, two step-granddaughters and one step great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a step-grandson and a step-granddaughter. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Mamie Hayslett, their two infant children, Mary Elizabeth and Kenneth Ronald, son, William "Bill" Morris Coffey, five brothers, Coolie, Sam, Saylor, Roy, and John Henry, two sisters, Florence Bateman and Ella Clements, and a great-granddaughter.

He is survived by two sisters, Lottie Mae Steed of Front Royal and Mary Stuart Lotts of Fairfield, three children Betty Coffey Funkhouser and husband Jack, Berman "Cotton" Coffey and Shirley Coffey Humphries and husband Freddie, all of Glasgow, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank his special caregiver, Jackie Kerr and the Rockbridge Area Hospice.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 PM on Friday, October 8, 2004 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dean Staton, Rev. Justin Thomas and Clarence Seaman officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

James Alfred Coffey and Mamie Etta Hayslett were married on 15 August 1928 in Rockbridge Co., VA. They appeared in the census on 14 April 1930 in Natural Bridge Dist., Rockbridge Co., VA.29524 They29524 appeared in the census on 7 May 1940 in Natural Bridge Dist., Rockbridge Co., VA.29525 James and Mamie29525 were separated on 17 January 1970 in Virginia and divorced 27 January 1971 in Virginia.29526

This is the family of Berman "Cotton" Coffey, Betty Coffey Funkhouser, and Shirley Coffey Humphries of Glasgow, VA. Mamie Etta Hayslett, daughter of William Donald Hayslett and Emma Kirby, was born on 27 January 1911 in Rockbridge Co., VA. Mamie died at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Rockbridge Co., VA on 26 June 1994.

Coffey, Mamie Etta Hayslett, 83, of Natural Bridge, was graciously taken by the Lord to her Eternal Home on June 26, 1994, after a long illness. During this time, she received an enormous amount of love from her friends and family. Despite the illness, her last days were happy. The family wishes to thank all who helped in so many ways.

She was the eldest daughter of William McDonald Hayslett and Emma Kirby Hayslett. She was born in Rockingham County on January 27, 1911. She is survived by a former husband, Alfred Coffey of Glasgow, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Betty) Funkhouser and Mrs. Freddie (Shirley) Humphries, both of Glasgow; one son, Berman (Cotton) Coffey, Lyndhurst, Va.; nine grandchildren and their spouses; 9 great-grand children and 3 step-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Elizabeth) Dudley of Buena Vista, Miss Josephine Hayslett of Lexington; three brothers, Jim Hayslett of Salem, Robert Hayslett and John E. Hayslett, both of Lexington; two daughters-in law, Bonnie Coffey Burjoice of Staunton and Ola Mae Coffey of Staunton. She was preceded in death by three children, Mary Elizabeth, Kenneth (Pee Wee), and William (Bill) Coffey; two sisters and three brothers.

She retired from Burlington Industries with 29 years of service. She was a faithful member of Natural Bridge Baptist Church, helped establish the local chapter of Glasgow-Rockbridge A.A.R.P. #2071, which she was a charter member. She was also a charter member of the Rockbridge Arthritis Support Group. She was a lady of honor and courage and loved by all who knew her.

Give praise and glory to God for her life at a service in her honor on Wednesday, June 29, 1994, at 2 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Dr. D.B. Martin and the Rev. Tim Madison sharing the previous truth of God's word.

The family sincerely requests that those who prefer may make donations to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va 24450, in her honor.

The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington, and at other times at the hone of Jack and Betty Funkhouser.

Kenneth Ronald Coffey was born on 2 July 1944 in Rockcastle Co., KY. Kenneth died in Rockbridge Co., VA on 27 January 1945 and was buried at Timber Ridge ARP Church Cemetery in Lexington, VA in January 1945 .29528
