4323. Rev. Hugh (Henry?) Davis Coffey⁵⁵⁴⁰ was born in November 1861 in Nelson Co., VA. On 26 May 1885 Hugh received a patent for a measuring scale.

Henry Davis Coffey of Massies Mill, VA received a Letter of Patent for a "weighing-scale" on May. 26, 1885 with one-third of the patent assigned to Lysander N. Miller. Henry was also the author of My Life with God, which describes his 35 year career with the Virginia Christian Missionary Society. And, he also authored Using God's Power, a book of practical sermons, in 1944. Hugh lived with his son Leonard in Campbell Co., VA in 1920. Hugh died on 6 September 1947 at the age of 85 in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA and was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA.^{5081,5541,5542}

"Coffey Rites Held at Lynchburg

"Lynchburg, Sept. 8-Funeral services were conducted Monday in Euclid Avenue Christian Church for the Rev. Henry [sic] Davis Coffey, 86, for many years a Disciples of Christ evangelist and for 35 years connected with the Virginia Christian Missionary Society, who died Saturday at his home in Buckner.

"He is survived by his second wife and the following sons: Leonard W. Coffey, Cincinnati; Roy T. Coffey, Bristol; Clyde Coffey, Portsmouth; Raymond T. Coffey, Lynchburg; a daughter, Mrs. W. H. Leake, of Glen Allen, and these brothers and sisters, F. M. Coffey, Charles C. Coffey, Mrs. C. G. Campbell and Mrs. Laura C. Meredith all of Lynchburg; Edgar R. Coffey of Richmond and Horace J. Coffey, of Goochland."

"Mr. Coffey is an evangelist of the Christian Church and handles our books in connection with his meetings, receiving a small commission on those he sells. In one of his letters he writes as follows: 'During the year I have worked in fourteen counties and in two cities. I have conducted fifteen revivals and had more than three hundred conversions. I have donated more than five hundred copies of the New Testament, paying for same myself, and I have sold about two hundred and fifth copies. I find nothing so helpful in my work as getting the people interested in the 'Old Book.' To sell or give a nice large-print Testament to a person or family counts more than preaching a sermon. I shall continue to use the 'Old Sword,' and will need many more with which to fight the Master's battles."

Campbell were married on 22 January 1885 in Nelson Co., VA.⁵⁵³⁸ In census years 1900 and 1910 Hugh and Lydia resided in Brookville Twp., Campbell Co., VA.⁵⁵³⁹ Lydia Susan A. Campbell, daughter of Francis Jefferson Campbell and N. Catherine Stover, was born on 22 May 1866 in Nelson Co., VA. Lydia died at home at 502 Stewart Street in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA on 24 October 1918 of a brain tumor and was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA in October 1918 .^{5081,5534,5535,5536,5537}
