Pearl Coffey Edwards Messer, 81, of 174 Biodome Drive, Waynesville, died Saturday, March 14, 1998 at the Brian Center.

A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Posey Gerome Coffey (1878 - 1949) and the late Mary Briggs Coffey (1884 - 1930). She was preceded in death by her first husband Herman Edwards (1911 - 1966); grandson David Edwards (1961 - 1993); twin sisters Gertrude Shelton (1910 - 1969) and Vertie Coffey (1910-1910); half-sisters Clara Allman (1898 - 1972), Lorene Robinson (1900 - 1960) and Lillie Edwards (1903 - 1991); brothers Monroe Coffey (1908 - 1913), Albert Coffey (1914 - 1918) Frank Coffey (1920 - 1996) and James Coffey (1918 - 1988), and stepmother Lizzie Coffey (1904 - 1994).

Pearl was a member of North Hazelwood Baptist Church and had retried from Dayco Products as a V-belt trimmer with 26 years of service.

Surviving are her husband Jarvis Andrew Messer of Waynesville, sons Marion Edwards of Waynesville and Robert Edwards of Lyman, S.C.; three sisters: Evelyn Hatton of Lexington, KY, Viola Buchanan Shelton of Waynesville and Ada Mashburn of Waynesville; half-sisters Esther Bailey of Weaverville and Meredith Wilburn of Marshall; half-brothers Anderson, Carroll, Floyd and Leonard Coffey, all of Mars Hill; six grandchildren Chuck and Kevin Edwards, Jeannie Martinez, Tammy Woody, Sherry Hayes and Dale Edwards; 12 great grandchildren and one great-great- granddaughter.

Services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home. The Revs. Ernest Messer, Jerry Nelson and Cloyes Starnes will officiate. Burial will follow in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm Monday at the funeral home.

Pearl Madeline Coffey and Herman Edwards were married on 3 July 1936 in Madison Co., NC.39358 Herman Edwards was born on 21 February 1911. Herman died in Asheville, Buncombe Co., NC on 28 July 1966 and was buried at Old Bull Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Mars Hill, Madison Co., NC in July 1966 .39359

Pearl Madeline Coffey and Jarvis Andrew Messer were married after 1966. Jarvis Andrew Messer was born on 9 May 1912 in North Carolina. Jarvis died in Haywood Co., NC on 16 October 1999 and was buried at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville, Haywood Co., NC in October 1999 .39360
