Rites for P.G.Coffey, 71, to be Held Saturday

P.G. Coffey, 71, of the Bull Creek section of Madison County, died at his home about 7:30 o'clock Thursday morning, April 28, 1949. He had been in declining health for sometime.

Funeral services will be held at Bull Creek Saturday at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Perry Sprinkle, the Rev. David Roberts, the Rev. Vaughn Fisher and the Rev. Horace Arrowood officiating.

Pallbearers will be Fred Merrell, Grant McDarris, Gay Merrell, Joseph Reese, Albun Buckner and Woodfin Capps.

Honorary pallbearers are George Bryan, Charlie Phillips, Murray Rice, Corry Wallin, Leo Kent, McKinley Rice, Marvin Ball, McKinley Green.

Flower girls will be granddaughters, Mrs. Pink Burris, Mrs. Cliff Chapman, Miss Edna Robinson, Kathleen Edwards, Eula Edwards and Beulah Edwards.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lizzie Griffin Coffey, ten daughters: Mrs. Bernard Edwards, Marshall, Route 2; Mrs. Charlie Allman, Weaverville, Route 1; Mrs. Aldon Robinson, Swannanoa, Route 1; Mrs. Herman Shelton, Greenville, S.C.; Mrs. Jule Buchanan, Hazelwood; Mrs. Pearl Edwards, Mars Hill, Route 1; Mrs. Earl Mashburn, Waynesville; Mrs. Jesse Hatton, Lexington, Ky; and Esther and Mariedith of the home; six sons, James and Frank of Marshall, Route 2; Carroll, Anderson, Floyd and Leonard of the home; 24 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Fleming, Asheville; and three brothers, Ivory and Neal Coffey of Asheville; and Virgil of Mars Hill.

Monroe Coffey was the first child of Posey Gerome Coffey and Mary Briggs Coffey (his second wife).

He was born about 1908 and died about 1913.

Posey Gerome Coffey and Mary Briggs Coffey had 9 other children: Gertrude ("Gertie" twin), Vertie (twin), Viola, Albert, Pearl, James, Frank, Ada and Evelyn.

Other family members who are buried in the same cemetery are Julia Fisher Coffey (Posey Gerome Coffey's first wife), Albert Coffey (Monroe's brother) and Vertie (Bertie) Coffey (Monroe's sister, twin to Gertrude).

Family members have told how they would take Posey Gerome Coffey to this cemetery and that he told them that the family members were buried under the trees at the back left corner of the church (right side of the cemetery).

"Vertie Coffey was the third child of Posey Gerome Coffey and Mary Briggs Coffey. She was a twin to "Gertie" Gertrude Coffey, the second child of Posey Gerome Coffey and Mary Briggs Coffey.

Vertie lived only a few days."

Rev. Carroll Jerome Coffey was born on 14 January 1932 in North Carolina. Carroll died at Memorial Mission Hospital in Mars Hill, Madison Co., NC on 26 February 2013 and was buried at Vision Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Mars Hill, Madison Co., NC on 1 March 2013 .23118

Rev. Carroll Jerome Coffey, 81, of 120 Bailey Mountain Rd., Mars Hill went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Memorial Mission Hospital.
Mr. Coffey was a native of Haywood County having lived most of his life in Madison County. He was the son of the late Posey Gerome Coffey and the late Lizzie Griffin Coffey. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Marie Shelton Coffey, sons Ronnie and Michael Coffey, son-in-law Ricky Arrowood and great grandson Micah J. Coffey.
Carroll was a retired Baptist Minister and at one time pastored Union Valley Church.
Carroll is survived by his daughters Dianne Coffey of the home and Donna Burnette and husband Jerry of Marshall, grandson Travis Coffey and wife Veronica, granddaughters Michaela Reed and husband Derek and Sandra Burnette, great grandson Clay Coffey, brothers Floyd Coffey and wife Mamie, Leonard Coffey and wife Patricia, Anderson Coffey and wife Girtha; sisters Meredith Wilburn and Esther Bailey; half-sister Evelyn C. Hatton.
A funeral service will be held 2:00pm Friday, March 1 at Vision Missionary Baptist Church of which he was a member and deacon. Rev. Steven Glover, Rev. Wesley Pike, and Michael Garrison will officiate. Burial will follow in Vision Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Thursday, February 28 at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, Mars Hill.
