Cleveland Cleophus ‘Ophy' Coffey

Cleveland Cleophus Coffey, son of Benjamin and Lucy Barbre Coffey, was born in Hymera, Indiana on January 7, 1874 and departed this life at the Wayne County hospital on February 3, 1958 at the age of 84 years and 27 days.

When he was eleven years old, his parents moved to Illinois and later, when he was sixteen, the family came to Wayne county where ‘Ophy' as he was known to his friends, spent the remainder of his life.

He gave his life to Christ at an early age, uniting with the Unity Baptist church and later moved his membership to Cambria and then to Humeston First Baptist church where he remained a faithful member until his savior called him home.

On February 3, 1896 he united in marriage to Stella Mae Inman at Macomb, Ill. To this union five daughters and four sons were born. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, James and Pearl, two great grandsons and one great, great at granddaughter.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Hazel Colelough and Mrs. Mae Condit both of Denver Co., Mrs. Lou Dene Parker of Clinton Wisc., Mrs. Isabel Kirchner of Cambria and Mrs. Delores Hart of Corydon, two sons, Marvin of Creston and Harry of Humeston, 23 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and one brother, John of Moore Ok.

Funeral services were conducted at the Humeston Baptist church Thursday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. B.E. Nielsen officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Emogene Kinnear, Helen Richard, Dick and Charles Humeston Jr., with Mrs. Alfred Dent at the piano. His two granddaughters, Janice Kirchner and Benitah K. Coffey served as flower girls. Pallbearers were Marvin Coffey, Gene Musgrave, Gerald Musgrave, Jay Coffey, Arnold Coffey and Curtis Tuttle, which were one son and five grandsons. Interment was in the Green Bay cemetery southwest of Humeston.

Cleveland Cleophus "Ophy" Coffey and Estella Mae "Stella" Inman were married on 3 February 1896 in Macomb, McDonough Co., IL. They lived with his father in Wayne Co., IA on 10 April 1910. They appeared in the census on 10 January 1920 in Wayne Co., IA.24176 Ophy and Stella24176 appeared in the census on 9 April 1930 in Wayne Co., IA.24177 They24177 appeared in the census on 16 April 1940 in Cambria, Wayne Co., IA.24178 Estella Mae "Stella" Inman was born on 18 August 1878 in Randolph, Randolph Co., IL. Estella died on 26 October 1948 at the age of 70 in Wayne Co., IA and was buried at Green Bay Cemetery in Van Wert, Decatur Co., IA.24179,24180

Funeral services for Mrs. Ophey Coffey, who died at her home in Humeston, Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, 1948, were held Thursday afternoon at the Baptist Church in Humeston with the [R]ev. P. H. Blunt officiated.

Ray Evans, Willard Eaton, Charles Humeston, and Wayne Hutchinson, accompanied by Mrs. Albert Dent at the piano, sang "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Asleep in Jesus." A grandson, Roger Coffey, sang "The Lord's Prayer."

Pallbearers were sons and sons-in-law, James, Harry, and Marvin Coffey, Elliot Parker, Lorie Hart, and Edd Kirchner. Chassie Lee Elliott, Hilma West, Jean Parker, and Margaret Mae Kirchner, four granddaughters, acted as flower girls.

Mrs. Coffey was laid to rest in the Green Bay Cemetery.

The following obituary was read at the services:

Stella Mae Inman, daughter of James and Mary Inman, was born at Randolph, Ill., Aug. 18, 1878, and died at her home in Humeston Oct. 26, at the age of 70 years, 2 months, and 6 days.

Her mother died when she was only 3 weeks old. When 8 years of age she came to Iowa to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. John Rickert, living there as a daughter. The rest of her life was spent in the vicinity of Humeston and Cambria.

She gave her life to Christ when 12 years of age, uniting with the Maple Grove Church, later moving her membership to Unity, Cambria, and Humeston Baptist churches, where she still remained a member until her Savior called her home.

On Feb. 3, 1896, she was united in marriage to Ophy Coffey at Macomb, Ill. to this union were born nine children, five daughters and four sons: James and Marvin of Corydon, Hazel Musgrave and Mae Coffey of Denver, Colo., Lou Dene Parker and Harry Coffey of Owatonna, Minn., Dolores Hart and Isabel Kirchner of Cambria, one son, Pearl, dying in infancy.

Besides her beloved husband and children she leaves 22 grand children, 9 great grand children, one sister, Bess Larner, of Macomb, Ill., three brothers, Melvin of Clear Lake Hilands, Calif., Clarence of Washington, D. C., and Garnett of Macomb. Ill. Her mother and father, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.

She was a devoted wife and mother, always trying to make her family and friends happy and comfortable.

Bernese Delores Coffey was born on 27 July 1915 in Iowa. She lived with her parents in Wayne Co., IA on 11 April 1930. Bernese died in Urbandale, Polk Co., IA on 25 February 2005. Her burial site is unknown to me.
