Fifth Generation

229. James was probably born in Pedlar Dist., Amherst Co., VA on 20 July 1776. James died on 7 January 1849 at the age of 72, probably in Saline Co., IL and was buried at Bethel Creek Church Cemetery in Galatia, Saline Co., IL.779

Marvin Coffey's research shows that James was on the 1799 tax list in Cumberland Co. (later part of Wayne Co.), KY, but owned no property there until 1802.

His marriage to Frances is dated Jan. 16, 1804, but the consent note was signed Sep. 29, 1803, and bond dated Oct. 1, 1803. Marvin's conjecture is that they had to wait for the "circuit rider" to arrive.

James is on the 1802-1803 tax rolls in Wayne Co., and on delinquent tax records for 1812 and 1813. He is noted as having "moved to Ohio."

James M. Coffey and Frances Lane were married on 16 January 1804 in Wayne Co., KY.780,781 Frances Lane, daughter of Thomas Lane and Nancy Dabney, was born on 22 June 1785 in North Carolina. She lived with her son Eli in Hamilton Co., IL on 14 October 1850. Frances died on 24 October 1859 at the age of 74 in Saline Co., IL and was buried at Bethel Creek Church Cemetery in Galatia, Saline Co., IL.782,783
