Prominent Lawyer Dies After Prolonged Illness

Mr. Coffey Had Held Several Positions of Trust and Was Well Known

Boone, Sept. 1. - E. S. Coffey died Sunday evening at 7 o'clock after a long illness. He was a graduate of Wake Forest college of the class of 1890. He studied law under Judge G. N. Folk, in the Happy Valley, in Caldwell county, and began the practice of his profession in Boone, and continued till his death.

He was a candidate for solicitor of this district in 1902. He represented Watauga, Ashe and Allegheny counties in the state senate during the session of 1913. In 1917 and 1918 he held a government position in Washington, but in the interest of his family, whom he had with him in Washington, he resigned the position and returned to Boone. In 1921 he and F. A. Linney formed a law partnership.

Mr. Coffey was a Mason, becoming a Royal Arch Mason in 1912 and a Shriner in 1919. He has been one of the trustees of the Appalachian State Normal for a number of years, and was a member of the executive committee and of the building committee.

Mr. Coffey joined the Baptist church about 1912 and has been a devoted member and a faithful attendant on the Sunday school and church services, being a teacher in the Sunday school and a deacon in the church.

Boone, June 12.--(AP) - W. Hubert Coffey, 28, an engineer for the state highway department for a number of years, died here today.

The Rev. T. A. Hicks will conduct the funeral rites at the Boone Baptist church tomorrow afternoon.
