Sixth Generation

994. William Mills was born circa 1805 in North Carolina. He appeared in the census on 1 June 1830 in Hawkins Co., TN.4076 William died in Posey Co., IN .

On Dec. 9, 1845, William Mills transferred to John Mills, both of Hawkins Co., for $125, all interest in his one-eleventh undivided share of land from the estate of his father, John Mills, on the north side of Clinch Mountain, adjoining George Tucker, Hiram Mills, George Wolf; A. A. Kyle, and Howel Brewer, witnesses.

At the time of the sale George Tucker was a next door neighbor to the deceased John Mills.

On 25 March 1844, Abraham Hawk of Knox Co., TN, transferred to Barnett Cantwell of Hawkins Co., for $1400, 200 acres of land in Hawkins Co. in three tracts, on the north side of Clinch Mt., adjoining George Tucker, Jacob Turnmire, John Day; Perry Mills, and William Wilder were witnesses. Barnet Cantwell was a neighbor of George Tucker and John Day.

On Jan. 21, 1846, George Tucker of Hawkins Co., transferred to Barnet Cantwell of the same for $400, 50 acres of land in Hawkins Co., on the north side of Clinch Mt., including an improvement by Oliver Slatten, adjoining John Day and Barnet Cantwell; M. M. Webb, Jacob Turnmire, and Madison Day were witnesses.

The 1850 census shows the widow Ally Mills neighbors with John Day and Barnet Cantwell.

From the foregoing it is concluded that William was the son of John and Ally Mills.

The close relationshio of William Mills to the Orricks and the Barnet Cantwell family can be inferred by William's witnessing of land transfers, as follows:

1 Jan. 1830 - witnesses, along with Roberson Orrick, the transfer of land from John Cantwell, Sr., to John Cantwell, Jr.

14 Oct. 1831 - witness of trandfer from Roberson Orrick of Campbell Co., TN to John Cantwell, JHr., of Hawkins, Co.

13 Aug. 1834 - witness, along with John Cantwell of transfer from Daniel Rice to John Cantwell.

15 Aug. 1834 - witness along with Barnet Cantwell of transfer from James Rice to Barnet Cantwell.

21 Aug 1835 - witness along with Barnet Cantwell and Wm. P. Hays of transfer of land from Joel Rice and Levi Rice to John Cantwell, Jr.

William Mills and Rebecca Orrick were married in 1829. They appeared in the census on 23 November 1850 in Hancock Co., TN.4077 Rebecca Orrick, daughter of Benjamin Orrick and Lydia Brewer, was born in 1805 in Hancock Co., TN.

Rebecca's maiden name inferred from the 1850 census when we find Lydia Orrick, age 70, born VA, in the household with the family. Rebecca and William also named one of their daughters Lydia. Her father was probably Benjamin Orrick.

Isham Mills transferred 184 acres of land to Benjamin Orrick on 1 Sept. 1814 in Hawkins Co., on Big War Creek, a branch of the Clinch River. The property adjoined James Wilder, and appears to be adjacent to 100 acres of land that Isham transferred to James Wilder on May 9, 1812.
