Third Generation

33. James Coffey was born between 1735 and 1736.

There is a reference to a James Coffey, a constable, in early Surry Co., NC. Additional references are found in Stokes Co. (formed from Surry). Other Coffeys found at the same time are Micajah and Lewis M. Coffey. Lewis is alleged to be Lewis Moses "Levi" Coffey.

Lewis is said to have been born Nov. 1, 1798 in Stokes Co, and later found his way to Pulaski Co., KY where he married Delilah Turpin on Jan. 11, 1818. His name is Levi in the marriage record. He died in 1844 in Morgan Co., IN, and was buried in Sand Creek Cemetery, Martinsville, Morgan Co., IN.

Delilah was born 1792 in PulaskiCo., KY, and died 1873 in Martinsville, Morgan Co., IN. She is also buried in Sand Creek Cemetery. She is also said to have married Josiah Barnes after the death of Lewis.

Among Lewis' children was a son James Wilson Coffey, born May 10, 1822 in Pulaski Co., KY, and died 1889 in Lime Creek Twp., Washington, IA. In 1827 this family moved to Morgan Co., IN.

The original James Coffey of Surry Co., came there from Pittsylvania Co., VA, and has not yet been connected to any other Coffey family.

James may be the son of Annister of Essex Co., VA, and both Micajah and Lewis may be his sons.
