Samuel Monroe Coffey, 93, of Star Route, Lenoir, died at 2:35 p.m. Wednesday in a local hospital.

A former sawmill worker and farmer, Coffey was born Jan. 17, 1876 in Caldwell County, the son of the late Lano and Mary Austin Coffey.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Josephine Dellinger Coffey; three sons, Mack and Wilson Coffey, Route 1, Blowing Rock, and Boyd Coffey of Star Route, Lenoir; five daughters, Mrs. Andy (Bertha) Jenkins of Whitnel, Mrs. Lydia Coffey Gragg of Sawmills and Mrs. Leonard (Minnie) Thompson, Mrs. Howard (Deatte) Bolick and Mrs. Otis (Pauline) Bell, all of Lenoir; two sisters, Mrs. Celia Lowdermilk of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mrs. Julia Dellinger of Lenoir; 45 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Lenoir Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Murray Coffey. Burial will be in the family cemetery near the Caldwell-Avery county line.

The family will receive at the funeral home from 7 to 9 o'clock this evening.

Josephine Coffey

Mrs. Josephine (Josie) D. Coffey, 96, 1219 Peak Place N.W., died Monday in a local hospital.

She was born January 1, 1883 in Mitchell County, and was a daughter of the late Tom and Eueline [sic] McKinney Dellinger. she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel M. Coffey.

She is survived by three sons, Mack and Wilson Coffey, both of Blowing Rock and Boyd Coffey of the Globe community; five daughters, Mrs. Pauline Bell of Lenoir, Mrs. Howard (Deatte) Bolick of Lenoir, Mrs. Bertha Jennings of Lenoir, Mrs. Bill (Minnie) Thompson of Lenoir, and Mrs. Lydia Gragg of Sawmills; 45 grandchildren; 106 great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Revs. Murray Coffey and Lawrence Crump. Burial will follow in the Coffey family cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 o'clock.

Pallbearers will be James Bass II, Roger Hamby, Steve Thompson, Junior Billings, Roy Coffey, and Boyd Coffey, Jr.

In addition to Josie, some family memebers referred to her as "Safari."
