Death Ends Quarrel in Mountain County

Ab Lowdermilk is Dead, And Fred and Paris Coffey Held for Murder

Lenoir, Aug. 16. - Ab Lowdermilk, white man of Carey's Flats, is dead and Fred and Paris Coffey have surrendered to the Avery county sheriff for the murder of Lowdermilk as a result of a shooting scrape at Carey's Flats Wednesday afternoon at 5 o'clock, according to word reaching here.

According to meagre information from the mountain country, Fred and Paris Coffey were at Coffey's store, Edgemont, at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with two young girls whose names were not available. Fred Coffey then took the girls and his brother to the former's hoe, but his wife, sister of the dead man, resented the action.

Fred Coffey and his wife had words, according to the story, and Lowdermilk took the part of his sister, Mrs. Fred Coffey. Following a lively fist fight Lowdermilk is alleged to have threatened to beat Fred Coffey with an iron bar, at which time Paris Coffey interfened [sic]. When Lowdermilk refused to put down the iron bar Paris Coffey snatched a high-powered rifle and blew out the brains of Lowdermilk.

Trial was held at Newland for the pair, but the result of the magistrate's decision was not learned. The brothers gave themselves up without hesitation.
