MEMO: Paula referred to him as “Abner Gardner”, but every record I found referred to him as “Gardner A”. I have adopted the latter.

1870 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: Gardener A Teele (age 2) and his mother Ellen (27) are found in the household of his grandparents, John and Hannah Smith.

1880 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: Gardner still lives with his grandparents. Indexed as “Smitt”, but I read it as “Smith”. John (78) is there, identifies himself as a “Laborer” and as “Blind”. Hannah is age 73. Daughter Ellen Teele is 45, and her son Gardnan (sic) age 12.

MASSACHUSETTS MARRIAGE RECORDS:
On 25 Jul 1888 Gardner Abner Teele married Emma Augusta Deans in Waltham. His parents were Abner G and Ellen M. Her parents were Robert and Jennie.

1900 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: Gardner A Teele (age 31) and wife Emma A (31) are there with their son Louis G (age 10). Gardner is a “salesman, provisions”. Emma says her parents were born in Scotland.

1910 CENSUS, WALTHAM, MIDDLESEX, MA: Gardner A (41) and Emma A (41) are in the same household with their on Louis G (age 21) and his wife Grace G (19) Teele . Their granddaughter Dorothy G Teele is age 2 months.

1920 CENSUS, MELROSE, MIDDLESEX, MA: Gardner A Tiele, age 52, is a lodger in the household of John J. Riley and 7 Riley children. He is a meat cutter. (I believe this is the right person, and that his wife Emma must have died before this year.)

NEW MARRIAGE: I found a family tree that indicates that Gardner A Teele married Gertrude Chandler (Eaton) Foley in 1920. (There is a picture of Gardner and Gertrude Teele.) This seems consistent with next census report.

1930 CENSUS, MELROSE, MIDDLESEX, MA: Gardner G “Toole” (age 61) is there with wife Gertrude C Foley (57), and step-daughter Carrie G Foley (30), and step-son Thomas L Foley.

1940 CENSUS, MELROSE, MIDDLESEX, MA:

Gardner is working as a meat cutter. (Step)daughter Carrie (Foley?) is a clerk. Nancy is a granddaughter (not clear on relationship)

Gardner A Teele filed a “life claim” on 21 Sep 1950. Gave his birth date as 7 Jun 1868.
