MASSACHUSETTS TOWN BIRTH RECORDS: Online summary reports Abner Gardner Teel was born 3 Mar 1839* in Medford. His father’s first name was “Thomas”, and his mother “Susan”. SOURCE: Vital Records of Melford (Compiled by the New England Historic Genealogical Society.)

*BIRTH DATE CORRECTION: Found online a copy of “Vital Records of Medford, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850”, Published 1907 by New England Historic Genealogical Society. The first 5 children of Thomas and Susan Teel are recorded there. The source of all of these is described as “Church Record, Second Church, Congregational”. And the dates for the first four children are ALL the same - 3 Mar 1839. I am quite convinced that these are BAPTISM dates, NOT birth dates, and those first children were all brought in for baptism on the same day. Therefore I WILL NOT use this as the date for the birth of any of them, using instead the approximate date from the 1850 census.

1850 AND 1860 CENSUS: Abner is in the household of his father. See notes there.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE: Abner G. Teel of Weston, MA, a farmer, enlisted 23 Aug 1862 in response to call for “9 month troops” (forecast was that the war would easily be over in 9 months). Enlisted in Company H, Massachusetts 43rd Infantry Regiment on 20 Sep 1862. This regiment fought in several battles in North Carolina. Mustered out on 30 Jul 1863 at Readville, MA. For more info see www.stoughtonhistory.com/Pratt-43rd.htm

CIVIL WAR DRAFT REGISTRATION: Abner G Teel, a farmer, single, registered for the draft in June 1863. Remarks say “44th Mass Regiment 9 months”, indicating he was already serving.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE: Abner G. Teel (some sources show Teele), a farmer, enlisted in Company E Massachusetts 61st Infantry Regiment on 28 Sep 1864. Mustered out on 27 Oct 1864 at Galloup’s Island, Boston, MA. This was identified as a “disability discharge”.

MASSACHUSETTS STATE CENSUS 1865: Abner Teal, laborer, age 30 and Ellen Teal age 31 are living in Waltham, Middlesex, MA.

MASS DEATH RECORDS: Abner G Teel died 27 Feb 1868 in Waltham, age 30 years, 3 months, 4 days. Parents Thomas and Susan. Cause of death kidney disease. (Note his son Abner Jr. was born 7 Jun 1868, so wife Ellen was about 5 months pregnant when he died.)

WALTHAM 1869 CITY DIRECTORY: “Teal Ellen, widow of Abner, boards J. Smith’s, School”. SEPARATE ENTRY: “Smith John, milkman, house School, near Exchange.

Must have married Ellen Smith after 1860, and he is gone in 1868. See census results for Ellen’s father. Since Ellen has a 2-year-old son in 1870, best guess is they were married about 1867?
