D. P. Coffey Dies in Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock, Jan. 2--Funeral services for D. P. Coffey, 79, who died Thursday, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Blowing Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Carlton Cox and Dr. Walter Keys. Burial will be in Blowing Rock Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Luda P. Coffey; four daughters, Mrs. Clara C. Thompson of Hickory and Mrs. A. Ann C. Brown, Mrs. Stuart Bolick and Mrs. Richard Gragg, all of Blowing Rock; and three sons, D. Paul Coffey and Glenn and Justice Coffey, all of Blowing Rock; one sister, Mrs. J. Lee Hayes of Lenoir; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Coffey had been in the mercantile business in Blowing Rock for more than 50 years. He served as mayor and alderman for more than 46 years and was a charter member of the Blowing Rock Civitan Club. He was treasurer of the First Baptist Church for more than 25 years.


Dock was the mayor of Blowing Rock for 16 years.

Mr. Herbert Glenn Coffey, 91, of Blowing Rock, died April 18, 2003.

He was born in Blowing Rock to the late D.P. and Luda Perry Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was the owner of the Blue Ridge Motel. He was a realtor, former member of the Town Council, active in politics, an honorary Kentucky Colonel, and a life time member of Rotary International.

Survivors include one brother, Justin Coffey; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Paul Coffey; nieces and nephews, Patricia Bolick Moser, Susan Gragg, Hoyle and Perry Coffey, Richard Gragg, and Lewis and Albert Coffey; great-nieces and nephews, Tim Lawson, Kim and Brian Coffey, Lana Coffey, Heath and Celia Coffey, and Hunter Coffey; great-great nieces and nephews, Stephanie O?Keefe, Annelise Coffey, Bryson and Spencer Williams. The family wishes to recognize Mrs. Kay Johnson, friend and caregiver.

He was preceded in death by sisters and brother, Clara C. Thompson, Helen C. Moore, Rosella C. Willis, Lucille Coffey, Ann C. Brown, Virginia C. Bolick, Luda C. Gragg, and Paul Coffey; and great-nieces, Jenifer L. Marriott and Kelly Ann Coffey.

Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Chapel with Dr. Daniel Featherstone officiating.

Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Blowing Rock Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 823, Blowing Rock, N.C. 28605.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

According to his obituary in The Blowing Rocket newspaper, Herbert Glenn Coffey was "lovingly called Col. Glenn because of his being designated a Kentucky Colonel..."
